Victoza is the diabetes-focused brand of liraglutide, the same active molecule in Saxenda — but at a lower maximum dose specifically calibrated for blood sugar management in type 2 diabetes. FDA-approved in 2010, Victoza was one of the earliest GLP-1 receptor agonists and has among the longest real-world safety records of any GLP-1 medication.
Victoza is injected once daily and titrated from 0.6mg (a tolerability dose) to a maintenance dose of 1.2mg or 1.8mg. The lower dose cap compared to Saxenda's 3mg reflects the different therapeutic goal — glycemic control rather than primary weight management. However, meaningful weight loss does occur as a secondary benefit at the 1.2–1.8mg dose range.
In clinical trials, Victoza reduced HbA1c by 1.0–1.5% and produced modest weight loss of approximately 3–6 lbs over 26 weeks. In the LEADER cardiovascular outcomes trial, liraglutide significantly reduced major cardiovascular events including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk.
